OUR OCEAN, OUR FUTURE

 

Overview

The Corvo Oceanography Centre is a scientific institution dedicated to oceanography and education, located at Corvo Island, a very small island situated in the Atlantic Ocean and part of the Azorean archipelago. The Centre is a private non-profit organization, associated to EFAO Oceanography Institute and operating within a network and in partnership with other scientific institutions.

The Centre promotes research and development, engaging also all population of the island (circa 400 inhabitants) in fostering literacy of the oceans and the understanding of the ocean primary role in sustain and regulating life on the planet.

The Centre is governed by a simplified model of governance, organized around an executive director, administrative staff, research and development units, and supported by a Scientific Council and a General Council with representatives of the local community: its inhabitants and institutions.

Apart from administrative work, the Centre is organized around working groups driven by overarching objectives and strategic themes defining research and development projects.

Although a small institution, the importance of the Centre lies in its location, practically in amid distance from Europe to America, which permits the direct observation and analysis of local physical, chemical and biological data that imports on many scientific studies and models of prediction.

Today, more than ever, oceans emerge as one of the last domains yet to be fully understood; and in a fast changing world set by the process of globalization and environmental degradation, its role in climate change prediction and import on economy and society as a whole is of paramount importance.

Corvo island has been designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2007.
